Charity as a Principle of Freemasonry
Charity, often expressed through the Masonic principle of Relief, has long been an important part of Freemasonry. It encourages members to provide assistance to those experiencing hardship and to contribute to worthy charitable causes within their communities.
Masonic charity can take many forms. Depending on the Lodge, District, Province, or charitable organisation involved, assistance may include support for individuals and families, educational initiatives, healthcare projects, community organisations, and institutions caring for vulnerable people.
Across Kenya and other parts of Africa, Masonic charitable funds and organisations have supported a range of causes. Some are primarily concerned with the welfare of Freemasons and their dependants, while others provide assistance to wider communities and established charitable institutions.
The principle of charity is closely connected with the broader Masonic ideals of Brotherly Love, Relief, and Truth. Through charitable giving, volunteering, welfare assistance, and community support, Freemasons seek to put these principles into practice.
Forms of Masonic Charity
- Welfare and Relief – Providing assistance to Freemasons, widows, families, and individuals experiencing financial or personal hardship.
- Education – Supporting educational opportunities, students, schools, and learning initiatives through charitable contributions.
- Healthcare – Supporting hospitals, medical treatment, healthcare institutions, and health-related community initiatives.
- Community Support – Contributing to charitable organisations, community projects, and institutions assisting people in need.
- Emergency Assistance – Providing support during circumstances such as bereavement, disasters, or other unexpected hardships.
Masonic Charity in Africa
Masonic charitable activity can be found in many African jurisdictions. Examples include the Grand Lodge of Africa Masonic Fund in Kenya, the East Africa Masonic Fund, the Masonic Charity Fund of Zambia, and charitable initiatives associated with Masonic organisations in South Africa and Nigeria.
These organisations and funds demonstrate the different ways Masonic charity can operate. Some focus primarily on Masonic welfare, while others support schools, hospitals, orphanages, hospices, community organisations, and other charitable causes.
The Principle of Relief
Relief represents the practical expression of compassion and assistance within Freemasonry. It encourages members to recognise the needs of others and, where possible, contribute their time, resources, or financial support to provide meaningful assistance.
Through Lodges, charitable funds, Districts, and other Masonic organisations, charitable work continues to form an important part of the wider Masonic tradition of service and community support.
